Calima in Lanzarote: What it is, how long it lasts and what to do, without ruining your holiday ;)

Ada Vidodo

If you woke up in Lanzarote and the sky looks like someone applied a sepia desert filter... congrats, you have discoverd calima.

Calima Lanzarote is basically sagaran mineral dust in the air. It can make the horizon disappear, your throat feels dry and your car looks like it survived the Dakar Rally overnight. It is not just fog, it is not just clouds, it is the sahara saying hello from the sitance.

What is calima in Lanzarote, in normal human language?

Calima happens when winds lift mineral dust from North Africa and transport it towards the Canary Islands The dust can reduce visibility and sometimes worsen air quality, especially for people with asthma or respiratory sensibility.

The official gron up term you will see is "intrusión de polvo saharino" (Sahara mineral dust intrusion). AEMET literally has a dedicated product for this.

Is calima dangerous?

For most tourists, calima is more annoying than dangerous: dry eyes, scrathy throat and hazy views.

But if you have asthma/ COPD/ respiratory sensitivity then it can be a real issue, and that is when you should reduce outdoor exposure and follow official guidance.

How long does calima last in Lanzarote?

Most calima episodes are short lived, often a couple of days, but it varies depending on wind pattern. That is why the best move is not to guess but check official dist forecasts.

How to check if calima is happening right now, the fast a reliable way

If you want to know the calima Lanzarote today, do this:

1- AEMET mineral dust maps: Look for the probability and concentration products for the canary Islands.

2- Government of the Canary Islands alert: When calima is expected to be significant they sometimes issue a pre alert ( prealerta por calima) for islands like Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

What to do in Lanzarote when calima hits (your "still a good day" plan)

1- Swap views for vibes

Calima steals the postcard horizon, so do not fight it, lean into:

- Cafés, slow breakfast is basically a Canary sport

- local food spots

- shopping and markets

- museums and indoor culture

2- Choose low effort, low exposure stops

If the air feels heavy or dusty, pick places where you can dip in and out quickly. Keep it easy, you are on holidays afterall.

3- Beach but smart

If you still want the coast, go for a walk, not a long workout. If the Sea is rough, skip dramatic cliffs and wave platforms. Use common sense and local warnings.

Calima tips tourists wish they knew earlier

- Hydrate (dry air is sneaky)

- Eye drops can be life changing

- Do not plan your best photoshoot day around it, calima does not care

If Calima messes with Plan A, Vidodo Guide makes it easy to switch to a "Plan B day" route fast: indoor spots, shelteres walks and zero Google spirals.

You will see the word verbena on a fiesta poster and wonder what it means. It is not a concert, not a club and not quite a village party either. It is all three and none of them at the same time: a late-night local celebration with live music, dancing, food, neighbours, families, visitors and the kind of atmosphere you only really understand once you are standing in the square.
