Lanzarote Tram Proposal 2026: What's really being discussed (Costa Teguise- Arrecife- Puerto del Carmen)

Ada Vidodo

If you have seen people asking “Lanzarote tram” or “tranvía lanzarote” lately, here is the truth. Nothing is approved to be built. But the idea is officially being talked about as one option to fix the island's biggest mobility headache: the central corridor linking Costa Teguise, Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen.

This is one of those topics that starts as “interesting news” and ends up becoming the kind of thing tourists search as public transport Lanzarote and how to get from Costa Teguise to Puerto del Carmen.

What has been confirmed, and by whom

According to SER Lanzarote, the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, José Valle, met with the Director Insular of Spain's General Administration in Lanzarote, pedro Viera and pushed for a frequent, efficient, high capacity transport system on the islands central axis.

Is it a rumor or official discussion?

It is not a random rumor from someone's cousins Whatsapp group, It is an officially reported discussion driven by the Chamber of Commerce as part of its Plan de Activación, but this is still an idea stage, not confirmed build.

For travelers this links directly to high intent searches like “Costa Teguise to Arrecife transport”, “best way to get around Lanzarote without a car”, and “guagua Lanzarote routes”. If this corridor ever becomes faster and more frequent, it will not just be a local infrastructure story. It would make bouncing between the main towns way easier.

What would happen next? realistic, not hype

Because what has been reported is a push for better high capacity transport, the next step, if anything moves forward, typically look like:

  • feasibility studies

  • Coast and route analysis

  • political approvals

  • deciding between tram vs bus rapid style corridor

Right now, the only truthful takeaway corridor.

Lanzarote is discussing a tram or a dedicated shutter bus corridor for the central axis. Nothing is confirmed to be built yet.

Is there a tram in Lanzarote right now?

No. This is a proposal being discussed, not a current system.

Where would the Lanzarote tram proposal be?

The discussion targets the Costa Teguise- Arrecife- Puerto del Carmen corridor

What is the alternative tram?

A dedicated lane/ corridor for guaguas lanzaderas (shutter buses) has been mentioned as an option.
