Playa Blanca, Lanzarote: Beaches, things to do and Travel Guide

Ada Vidodo

The southern resort that actually delivers on its promise (rare, we know)

Playa Blanca sits on the sunny southern tip of a place that has figured life out. Once a quiet fishing village, it has now grown into a relaxed resort town with beautiful beaches, a gorgeous promenade, a marina full of restaurants and weather that makes you quietly resent wherever you came from.

Lanzarote Airport is around 30 to 35 km away, which is about a 30-minute drive. You will be at the beach approximately 31 minutes after landing. You're welcome.

Best Beaches in Playa Blanca

Playa Dorada

Often called the best beach in Playa Blanca, Playa Dorada sits in a sheltered bay between the town centre and the marina. Calm, clear water, sunbeds, watersports and beachfront cafés. The kind of beach where you sit down at 10 am and suddenly it is 4 pm and you have achieved absolutely nothing and feel great about it.

Playa Flamingo

One of the best family beaches in Lanzarote. Breakwater keep the water shallow and gentle, ideal for children, nervous swimmers and anyone who would like to swim without being ambushed by a wave.

Papagayo Beaches

About 10 to 15minutes by car, Papagayo beaches are widely considered the most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote. Turquoise water, golden sand and dramatic cliffs. The kind of view that makes people reconsider their entire life choices. Go early and stay longer than planned. This is the only correct strategy.

Things to do in Playa Blanca

Marina Rubicón

Restaurants, cafes, bputiques and excursion boats are arranged around the water in a way that feels almost unfairly picturesque. There is also a popular outdoor market twice a week. Good for local crafts and spending money you had not planned to spend.

Ferry to Fuerteventura

From the port you can take a ferry to Corralejo in Fuerteventura in just 25 to 35minutes across the Cocaina Strait. One of the easiest day trips from Lanzarote, Corralejo´s sand dunes are worth the crossing alone.

Timafaya National Park

About 20 to 25minutes by car is one of the most accessible major attractions in Lanzarote from Playa Blanca. Volcanic lava fields, the Fire Mountain, and geothermal demonstrations.

Frequently asked questions about Playa Blanca

Question: Is Playa Blanca worth visiting?

Answer: Honestly, yes, and I am not just saying that. It is one of the few resorts in Lanzarote that actually looks as good in person as it does in photos. Beastuful beaches, a mrina aou will want to eat at every night and Papagayo and Timanfaya both on your doorstep.

Question: Is Playa Blanca good for Families?

Answer: Really good. Playa Flamingo has calm, shallow water thanks to breakwaters, and children can splash around without anyone having a crisis. The whole town is flat, easy to walk around and not overwhelming. Day trips to Timafaya and Fuerteventura keep older kids interested, too.

Question: How far is Playa Blanca from Lanzarote airport?

Answer: About 30 to 35 km, which is roughly 30 minutes by car. It is the furthest south you can go on the island, so it is not the quickest airport transfer, but the drive is easy and the road is good.

Question: What are the best beaches in Playa Blanca?

Answer: Three beaches worth knowing: Playa Dorada for calm swimming and a good beachfront cafe, Playa Flamingo for families with young children and Papagayo if you want the best beaches in Lanzarote full stop.

Papagayo is 10-15 minutes by car and honestly in a different league. Plan a whole day, you will not regret it.

Question: Can you walk to Papagayo from Playa Blanca?

Answer: You can, but it is a solid 45-60 minutes each way on the coastal path in the sun, so think carefully before committing. Most people drive or take a boat trip from the marina. If you love a coastal walk and are not in a rush, it is lovely.

Question: Is there a ferry from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura?

Answer: Yes, and it is one of the best things you can do from Playa Blanca. The Ferry runs regularly from the port to Corralejo and takes about 25-35 minutes. Corralejo´s sand dunes are spectacular, genuinely worth the crossing. Check schedules in advance in peak season because they do full ip.

Question: How far is Timafaya National Park from Playa Blanca?

Answer: About 20 to 25 minutes by car, which makes it easy to visit for a morning or afternoon. The volcanic landscape is like nothing else you will see in Europe. It is properly extraordinary and absolutely worth getting up early for.
