Lanzarote Quemao Class: Surf & Bodyboard “Waiting Period”

This isn’t a normal competition with a fixed start time — it’s a “we wait for the perfect wave” event on El Quemao, one of Europe’s most powerful reef breaks. The organisers open a short official window, then pick the best 2 days inside it (based on swell + wind). When conditions line up, you’ll see invited surfers and bodyboarders charging a wave that’s famous for being beautiful… and seriously heavy.

Key thing for visitors: treat it like a live surf alert. One day it’s “maybe”, the next day it can be fully on. The organisers use a colour alert system (orange/yellow/green) to communicate when competition is likely or confirmed.
